I repeatedly receive letters from readers asking me if bad breath detectors really work. They want to know what I think about them.

Perhaps you might not know about bad breath detectors -- what they are and what they do.

If you look online you will see that they are usually hand held devices that you simply breathe into so that they can evaluate your breath odor. Once the measurement is made, a light will light up if there is an issue.

You will probably notice, depending on your model --- you will, customarily, get unique colored lights that suggest different types of odor on the breath. Usually a red light means BAD - a green light suggests GOOD, and there could easily even be yellow and orange lights suggesting borderline conditions.

What's the secret to how they work? I'm afraid I haven't a clue. But I don't really think about how they work, you just care that they do.

How much do these little things cost? As a rule nearly $20. And then there are the fancy models that will run you about $50 or $60, but usually those may also be used as a breathalyzer to measure alcohol on the breath.

Are they worth $20?

Well, let's think about this. If you have $20 to spend, and you feel comfortable with gadgets - grab one. Why not?

Alternatively, it doesn't cost $20 to check your breath by breathing onto the the back of either hand and give a sniff. You might also try licking your wrist lightly and then sniffing there.

By taking these two simple tests you should know right away if you have a breath odor. The first test is specifically for the most common types of bad breath, the second test is designed to pinpoint bad breath caused by saliva, which is not as common.

More important, at least I think, is what preventative measures are you taking to prevent bad breath?

You may not be aware of it, most over the counter mouth wash / gargles have a high amount of alcohol, which is bad!

Alcohol tends to dry the mouth, and this can be a real bad breath trigger.

When I was doing the necessary research for, The Bad Breath Treatment Guide, I found out that bad breath in the majority of those who suffer with it is prompted by one of these reasons:

The Foods You Eat
Dental Hygiene
Dried Mouth
Extreme Diets
Throat and Nose Infections
Constant worry

What's more, in a minority of cases, bad breath can be caused by serious medical conditions.

For most folks with this problem, though,, natural ingredients you have at home, used in your daily routine, should thoroughly eradicate foul breath odor!
