Getting quality canvas photo prints from your photos can also be influenced by the resolution of your camera and the size of the canvas onto which you photo will be reproduced. While the stores that offer the services of canvas photo prints can enhance the quality of your picture to a certain extent, there are some basic fundamentals that one must know in order to get high quality prints on canvas.

Let us first understand the meaning of camera resolution. Every digital camera comes with a standard resolution or mega pixels that define the quality of the photo. For instance, there may have been times when you have enlarged a certain photo on your computer and after a certain amount of enlarging, you can actually get to see the pixels or the small squares that make up the photo. In high resolution cameras, even if the picture is enlarged sufficiently, the pixels do not become immediately obvious.

Canvas is very special type of printing media which actually hides any imperfections very well. Also some photos that will look pixelated on paper will be just fine as canvas photo prints. Where for printing on paper we will need anything from 150dpi+, canvas will look good even when printed at 72dpi. One truth about the canvas photo prints is that mostly they are not going to be looked at from close distances.

If you want a high quality canvas print of your photo of a particular size, ensure that the camera resolution from which the photo was taken is compatible to the size of canvas. To ensure highest quality on canvas of any size – even up to 48 x 40 inches or 40 x 40 inches – digital cameras with a resolution of 8 megapixels or higher is the best.

While a 6 megapixel digital camera can work for canvas sizes up to 40 x 32 inches and 40 x 40 inches, the quality may fall short in case of reproducing a photo onto a canvas size of 48 x 40 inches.

With a 5 megapixels digital camera, it is best to go up to a canvas size of 32 x 24 inches or 32 x 32 inches to ensure high quality. Anything above that canvas size may fall a bit short of quality.

A 3 or 4 megapixel camera works best on a canvas size of 16 x 12 inches or 24 x 24 inches. Do not use a 3 or 4 megapixel camera if you want to reproduce the photo on a canvas size of 40 x 32 inches, 48 x 40 inches or 40 x 40 inches.

If you have any low resolution photos which you wish to print on a large sized canvas, it is better to first send the scanned photo to the store and request them to evaluate if you can get a good quality print on canvas. If you are not sure about the pixel size of your photo, all you need to do is click on the “Properties” of the jpeg image and check the summary - the width and the height refers to the pixel size of the photo.
