What do indigenous coastal dwellars have in common with joint problems, cardiovascular issues, depression, and eye diseases? The correct response is: -- almost nothing. What trait they do share is that they have a large amount of seafood in their diet. All the fats that are also in their diet do not seem to affect them. What they have naturally inherited is the best anti inflammation diet that probably exists.
You could also add Southern Europeans to the list that have a reduced rate of Western diseases. These would include Italians, Greeks and even the French. In fact, there is an anti inflammation diet called the Mediterranean. It varies widely from country to country but has several things in common - more root vegetables, green vegetables, nuts, eggs, fish and less red meat.
In order to evaluate its effectiveness, researchers used 600 people who had survived a heart attack. After four years there was 50-75% less risk of recurrent heart disease. Although the American Heart Association has no recommendation on the Mediterranean diet it did say: "The fact that omega-3 fatty acids exert cardioprotective effects in several ways suggests that they could have accounted for the results that were observed."
Numerous other studies since this initial research have confirmed a nutritional truth. An anti inflammation diet is not just for weight loss. It is to reduce disease. Think of any weight loss as a related benefit.
How does this work?
Inflammation is the bodies response to injury. More precisely, it is the bodies over response to injury. When our immune systems are in balance, the omega 3s the AHA referred to, and another group called omega 6s, exist in equal amounts. Unfortunately, that 1-to1 ratio does not exist for most of us. In fact it is about 15-to-1 out of balance in favor of omega 6s.
As a result, we have an overaggressive immune system. This means that every organ and joint in our body is overly susceptible to outside influences like pollution or a bad diet.
What do we do?
Cutting back on vegetable oils, salad dressings, baked goods, most meats and processed foods will help. However, it is the lack of omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil that are the real problem. These are what the FDA, AHA, the American Eye Institute and the Alzheimer's Foundation are recommending.
Pay attention to your foods. However, a serious anti inflammation diet must include the omega 3s in fish oil or you are not solving half the problem. Discover how to safely accomplish this by visiting my website.
