Having only just bought a new home I have been looking to acquire a few lovely pieces to furnish it with. I love the look and feel of antique furniture but it can be quite hard to come across just what you are looking for and the prices can be astronomical. In terms of the choice and pricing it made much more sense to look at reproduction pieces but I didn't want to compromise too much on the quality.
We visited a number of retailers in our local area but nearly all of our search has been carried out on the web. The quality of all the pieces they have on display really looks superb and fully justified our decision to go the reproduction route. To be honest I think you would have to be quite the expert to even tell the reproduction items from the originals. They don't just look 'old' - the way the French polishers have carefully added distress to the pieces is simply amazing. The hue and sheen of the wood really does make it look like some family heirloom that has obtained its character from years of love and use!
There is no substitute for care and attention to detail when it comes to quality furniture and it's obvious that they take that very seriously at Newby. They are clearly very careful with everything, from the choice of wood and cut to best show off the natural knots and grain to the quality of the construction and the expert finishing process. It's a labour of love for them I think and all aimed at producing a piece of furniture that the master craftsmen of generations ago would have been justifiably proud of.
