My wife’s always complained to me that I’m a ache in the back, but until fairly recently it almost seemed as though she was correct. Increasingly she seemed to find her back was stiff and achy, specially after having spent 7 or 8 hours with me. It got to the position where she was finding it difficult to bend down to put her shoes on, and kept wincing. We decided that there was a good likelihood it wasn’t actually me though, and that our relatively old and somewhat tired bed might have something to do with it.
We tried various things to see if it would have any effect. We knew it was perhaps the mattress, so the first thing we tried was stuffing sheets and towels under the mattress to add support. No good. Then we tried adding pillows down the centre of the bed for her to lie against. No good. I was all set to recommend she attempt sleeping on the floor when she made it pretty apparent that nothing was going to remedy a broken, tired old mattress, and we needed a new one.
I had a look around on the net and in the stores at new mattresses, especially those suitable for people with wives - sorry, I mean aching backs. I found that there’s a kind of mattress on the market which is made from a material invented by NASA. I knew that Teflon was invented by NASA, but couldn’t understand how sleeping on a non-stick frying pan would be of assistance. Nonetheless, it turned out that the mattress in question was referred to as a Tempur mattress.
It appears that these mattresses respond to the warmth of your body, softening wherever the temperature is and moulding to match up with the shape of your body. After a large amount of research (and nagging from certain quarters) I decided to go ahead and buy one of these mattresses. I found a company that had an excellent range of sizes and styles, and I was just about to place my order when I noticed that they were based in the Midlands. I hesitated for a moment, thinking what on earth the transport costs would be on a mattress all the way from the Midlands. I was surprised to learn that they were offering free post and packing, and so without a moment’s hesitation, paid.
A few days later on the mattress was delivered to my door, and I instantly unpacked it and began prodding it. It was definitely a very strange material, but I couldn’t truly see how it would give support. However, I laid it on the bed and looked at it. Hmm. I laid down on it, and immediately I could see what the problem had been. It’s only when your body touched the mattress and it begins to warm up that it starts to soften, and conform. It was only 10 in the morning but I felt like I could have a nap there and then!
We decided to try the mattress out for a week and see whether or not we could tell some real difference. I think after the first night’s sleep we were convinced, and a week later wouldn’t have parted with it for the world! Not only did my wife feel that her back was now a great deal more at ease and far less stiff and painful, but we were both sleeping like babies. For us there was no doubt - the Tempur mattress was easily the best mattress we’d ever experienced.
The only thing that keeps me awake now is the thought that I very nearly didn’t buy this mattress. I don’t know how they manage to deliver such large heavy items for free, but not only do they have one of the widest ranges I’ve found anywhere, they delivered to my door in record time. I’d certainly recommend them - you’ll sleep better for it!
