Informed people are starting to figure out that we need a large amount of omega 3 essential fatty acids. Consumers know that the word "essential" means that the body has to out source that particular nutrient. They are not made internally. In other words, they have to come from the diet. This is why high dose fish oil supplements are becoming more popular.
Until recently, some of the healthiest people on the planet lived in coastal areas where lunch and/or dinner consisted of cold water fatty fish like salmon, tuna, anchovies and mackerel. All of these are rich sources of omega 3s.
A recent study of Alaskan Eskimos was able to correlate extremely low cardiovascular diseases with really high dose fish oil - much as 8-10 grams of omega 3s per day. They constituted more than 10% of the total fatty acids in their blood.
However, in the modern world's contaminated oceans, we would also be getting a high dose of mercury, arsenic, PCBs and other toxins - so says the FDA, EPA and World Health Organization. Plus, most people do not want anywhere near this amount of seafood.
How did we get into this mess?
In the past humans used to get all the omega 3s they needed from wild fish, grass fed beef, nuts and wild game. The meats that we eat now are grain fed. That includes cattle, lamb, chicken etc. The stores are full of farmed fish.
In order to lower our cholesterol and saturated fat levels, we have been switching to the polyunsaturated fats -corn, soybean, and sunflower oils.
The common thread here is that there is less omega 3 content in all of them.
Do not despair. There is good news. Other studies have shown that amounts in the 2-to-4 gram per day range can be very helpful in many areas - heart, brain, joints, eyes, skin and the immune system. Even the early results of the anti-aging studies are using lower levels of omega 3s.
It is estimated that over 90% of people in the western world have an omega 3 deficiency. This means that 2-4 grams is not really high dose fish oil. The body will use part of that just to catch up.
In the real world, the best means of getting this level of high dose fish oil is with supplements. Many of them are available in 1 gram [1000mg] soft gel capsules. My product is molecularly distilled in order to separate out any contaminants. There are also no chemical additives. Daily doses of three-to-four capsules help my health and does not endanger it.
