These days, it seems like almost anyone is has started or is starting a record label. Entertainment blogger Perez Hilton has his own record label and is currently pushing former boyband member Travis Garland as his main act. Talk show host and American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres was inspired by Youtube star Greyson Chance to start her own record label. And speaking of American Idol: most unsigned contestants such as Constantine Maroulis and Chris Sligh started their own record labels.

So obviously, with the number of people entering the industry, it's easy to say that it's possible to start your own record label. But this begs the question: as an aspiring musician, why should you know how to start a record label?
When you start your own label, you have a bigger chance of earning bigger money. Of course, this possibility discounts the fact that an independent record label has to compete with companies with their own multimillion dollar marketing machinery. However, with your own record label, you will get majority of what you earn. As a recording artist of a major label, you only get paid a particular amount.

There's also the matter of creative freedom. In a major record label, you may not be free to do the music you want to do. Consider the likes of Kelly Clarkson: despite selling more than ten million albums and 15 million singles, her record label still created a fuss when she expressed her desire to have complete creative freedom on her album My December. The result: the negative publicity may have cost her millions worth in album sales. If this can happen to one of this generation's best selling artist, imagine what a record label would do to an upstart.

However, when you look at how to start a indie record label, you will realize that you are free to do as you please in terms of the music you record. As an independent outfit, you do not need to consider what is marketable and what sells. All you have to think about is the music you want to release.

Thanks to the internet, it's easier to market and even sell albums today. Youtube and Facebook make publicity easy, while your indie outfit can use various tools to sell the album online, even without the help of Apple and iTunes. Many artists do this. In fact, many known artists (most of which came from talent shows, such as American Idol or the lesser known Nashville Star) set up their own websites where their fans can purchase their songs and music.
Starting a record label has one very important benefit: you can release your music without any hassle and without the gate-keeping of music executives. This is all a true artist can dream of.
