Do an internet search on the word fish pills and see what you find. Many consumers do not seem to know that the majority of fish oil supplements do not come in pills but rather soft gel capsules. The ones that really do have a hard coating should be avoided, no matter how cheap they are.
Many consumers are not sure why companies use a clear soft gel capsule. This is done for several reasons. The first is ease of use. The majority of people find it easier to swallow a flexible capsule with a little water. This is easier than fish pills that you could use to play marbles.
Plus, if you have children, it is easy to cut the capsule in half and pour the contents onto yogurt or something else they like. If you are using a quality product there should not be any strange smell or taste. This brings me to my next point.
More and more fish pills are beginning to show up on store shelves. What these pills usually are is the oil surrounded by an enteric coating. This coating is designed to protect the contents from stomach acid so they can reach the small intestine.
This is fine for acid sensitive drugs or certain vitamins. It is not needed for the omega 3 fats in fish oil. They are absorbed easily by the stomach. The real reason a company uses an enteric coating has nothing to do with nutrition.
Seafood is a world wide business. All sorts of species are caught in one place and sold in another. Put another way, they are often transported long distances in tankers. Very often companies have to add chemical additives to keep the catch from spoiling. Even more additives can be used during processing.
It is unlikely that any of this will appear on the product label. However, if you have ever tasted a bad product, you do not need a label to disclose that something is wrong. One way to get around this is to make fish pills or enteric coated oil. This technique hides both the taste and smell.
There are several ways to protect yourself. One way is to find a company that has control over the entire process. How much control does a US company based out of California have over Norwegian salmon or anchovies from Peru.
I am not being critical of any country. I mention Peru because it is one of the worlds biggest suppliers of seafood. There are over 40 fishing ports on the 1800 mile coast. In Norway there are over 800 fish farms. Figuring out where your supplement came from can be very tricky.
Perhaps the best means to help your research is to go on the companies website and look for an independent lab report. This will tell you what is actually in the capsule - ocean contaminants, chemical additives and the omega 3 content.
Do not waste your energy with fish pills. Invest some time in discovering the better supplements that are offered. My website can help in this area.
