I believe the Bible is undoubtedly one of the greatest marriage books you might choose. God's plan is for man and woman to be together, to cleave unto each other and to raise children. The natural order of things is for father and mother to rear children in families. It is part of his plan for his children but is there value in these statements if you do not believe in God?
In times of trouble people often cry out to God for help perhaps for the first time in years! Many people believe in a higher authority or being or creator. These beliefs are invaluable in that they give us a motivation to contemplate saving a marriage instead of leaving it and moving on.
If you have a belief in God or another authority then there comes an understanding that there is a reason to life. One that maybe we do not grasp but does exist and thereby gives us a deep determination to tackle the challenges and issues we can face in our relationship.
Within this purpose are the trials and difficulties we come up against and through working through them we grow, progress and move toward this final purpose. Knowing and understanding that there is a explanation behind the issues we come up against within our marriage gives us motive to pursue the rectification of those issues. When we do not have a belief in an ultimate purpose then the situation can seem useless, saving your marriage becomes a pointless exercise and leaving the troubles behind is an easy choice.
Being with a person you love is a vision we all identify with. When a relationship dies we don't look forward to being alone, we look forward to meeting the perfect one, our faithful love, that person we can spend our entire lives with. A husband and wife who have been married for many years acknowledge that they have had their ups and downs but the great love they have developed through overcoming their trials together is what we all seek and reflects a little of our own purpose.
Understanding, trusting or just accepting that there is a purpose in the trials and issues we can face in a marriage is incredibly powerful. It enables us to recognize that there will be issues, that they are part of the purpose for our journey here on earth and saving a marriage is a realization of that purpose.
