There is a television in the US called "Jeopardy." Prizes are given away for the right responses to a quiz. The gimmick is that the contestant must word their answer in the form of a question. As an example, the answer might be: "things anti-inflammation drugs have in common." The money winning question would be - "what are - a little help and a lot of side effects?" It is no surprise that people are thinking that these answers are not as funny anymore. The question that they most want the answer to is: do fish oil supplements work?
First, the reason that people buy billions of dollars of fish oil supplements annually is because of what they contain - essential omega 3 fatty acids. The reason they are called essential is that the body can not make them. Back to that point later.
A dietary and lifestyle study recently released by Harvard University found that omega 3 deficiencies are the number six killer in the U.S. Tobacco, obesity and high cholesterol were first, second and third.
A question that is often asked when people see studies of this kind is this: how does this happen in the modern world? Simply put, it is the diet of the modern world that is causing the problem.
We no longer eat omega 3 rich foods for two reasons. They are not as available and it is just easier to fall into the processed food convenience cycle. As a result, we just do not have the omega 3s in our system that our grandparents did.
This has become an issue because omega 3s are part of every cell membrane of the body. They are fast, flexible and efficient. Replacing them with something slower causes a higher incidence of joint, heart, visual, skin and mental problems. Fish oil supplements do not cure anything. They give the body the tools to cure itself.
A few words of warning. Not all supplements are the same. In this area, quality matters. Remember that these fatty acids are essential and have to be replenished often. A mediocre fish oil product, that has contamination and freshness issues, is not something that you want to be taking daily.
The next step is concentrating your research on the quality fish oil supplements. Ones that are omega 3 rich and contaminant free are available. I use a product that I think of as health insurance that also makes me feel better. It costs less than $18/month.
