There has been a lot of debate in congregations across the globe as to if they should advertise or not. This often comes from a certain amount of arrogance that some Christians have. In some congregations people believe some magical force is going to bring people into their church. While I do agree that God is going to draw people to Himself we have to understand that He wants us to lift Him up in front of men first.
So is there any form of advertising God has employed in times past? If you don’t believe that God has used advertising in the past you have been in a cave. From the very beginning of time God has advertised Himself to individuals. This is done through creation itself. He has too used men through history to declaire His word to the people.
After all, preaching means to proclaim. Church advertising is simply preaching to the world about Christ. Is there still a question about that? What is the church? God has recorded in His word that the church is actualy the very body of Christ. So if we are advertising ourselves as the church then we are really lifting Christ Himself up!
The truth of the matter is that churches have been advertising since they came into existance. In the early days advertising simply ment speaking to lots of people. They would even be so well known through word of mouth advertising that people would line up outside the apostles doors before they had a chance to eat.
So what forms of advertising did the early church use? Typically they would use word of mouth advertising to get word out that the apostle was in town. As a matter of reality Paul was so well known just by word of mouth that individuals praised God when they heard that he was now preaching the gospel. Paul would send letters as well to let individuals know when he planned to stop by so that the word of mouth advertising could get started.
By this we know that not only did individuals spread the word by talking but they got a buzz going from mail outs so to speak. Was there any other form of church advertising ideas people had that they employed? The truth is that if they had been doing the open type of marketing that we enjoy today things would not have gone so well for them. The laws of the land in those days ment that openly sharring your faith in this way would mean your certain death. That doesn’t mean they did not want to shout it from the mountain tops though.
There was of course one other way they spread the word about christianity... but it price them a lot. In fact it cost them their lives. Today we have lines of people holding signs saying abortion is wrong. Then they had individuals lined up to be eaten by lions. There has never been another way to advertise that makes such an impact as when we spend our lives to reach others. An act like that would without a doubt demonstrait how important the churches belief was in Christ.
What if today we found some way to show just how significant our message is? We may require to do more than hold signs telling individuals that God hates what they are doing. Lets get to the root of the problem and instead tell them how God gave Himself for them even while they went about doing all these sins. So what can we do?
God said to come out from among the individuals and be different. As things stand the church looks like a normal business and the so called christians act just like all people else. I believe following Gods word will make the difference that individuals need to see. If we let ourselves answer the call to holiness then maybe that will be a great form of advertising. Individuals would take note of it!
Many individuals have a habit of quoting the words just live your life for others to see and that will be a witness for God. It will not work although unless your life looks different than all people elses life! I hear the numbers of Christian divorce is the same as the numbers of the world. If the bible said that those who love God follow His commands then not some of us who call ourselves Christians really love our God.
If we are going to get our church advertising in the right place we need to get this first step down. Cleaning the church up from the inside out is the best way to get our advertising in the right place again. We require repentance. We too require to openly make it clear that some of the people in church are not christians! There is not a doubt in my mind that this will cause people to get mad when we start telling them they are no longer members of the church, but it would be far worse to let the little foxes destroy everything. Drastic meassures must be taken. But the truth is that in these last days none of this advice will be taken.
