Discover Fish Oil Brain Supplements - Are They Needed
It has been well known among health professionals that the fish oil brain connection is very important - especially in younger age groups and senior citizens. Current research has indicated that this connection has implications for all ages.
First, the reason that many supplements are called omega 3 fish oil brain food or omega 3 for mental health is, not surprisingly, the omega 3s. The two that are chiefly found in cold water fatty species are DHA and EPA. Our brains are roughly 50% fats and DHA makes up about half of that. It is also a significant component in human breast milk. EPA is a part of every cell membrane in the body and helps regulate what goes in and out of cells.
It is important to note that these two work together. For instance, according to data presented at the Alzheimer's Association 2009 International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD 2009), DHA was much better at preventing Alzheimer's, but EPA was more useful if you already had it.
Another study presented at the same convention reported that daily supplements of DHA may improve both memory function and heart health in healthy older [60s or higher] adults.
Just after the conference a new study was published in the Journal of Nutrition. It tested middle age people between 35 and 54. "Higher DHA was related to better performance on tests of nonverbal reasoning and mental flexibility, working memory, and vocabulary" stated Dr. Matthew Muldoon from the University of Pittsburg.
You could fill a library with the research published on the health benefits of omega 3s for children in the womb and afterwards. IQs are higher, motor skills develop faster and after delivery, there is less postpartum depression in the mother.
I mention all this for two reasons. The first is to suggest there are scientific reasons behind the health claims. Second is this.
There is no special fish oil brain supplements for each of these or other benefits. Omega 3 is omega 3. Other sources are eggs, grass fed beef, flax and nuts. The problem is that none are as rich or efficient as the DHA and EPA from wild fatty fish.
Stick with a quality product. Make sure it is purified and the company can prove it. You do not need enteric coatings, or 3 6 9 oil, or cod liver oil. A good general rule is to stay away from sales.
An important point. Individual supplements are not needed for fish oil brain, cardiovascular, pregnancy or senior citizens. You will see these descriptions on the labels but they are only marketing titles. A single omega 3 product works in all these areas. My website can provide more information.
