Millions of people are on diets or taking statin drugs to lower their blood pressure. They may be using the wrong approach to fighting the problem. Consumers also believe that there is a fish oil blood pressure tie-in. Research has shown a small correlation but no one should be taking it solely for that reason.
Lets narrow this down. The benefits we will be discussing come from two omega 3 fatty acids that are prevalent in wild, cold water, predatory fish. There is no other source, either animal or vegetable that has the omega 3 concentration found in fish oil.
These omega 3s are vital to keeping our body in balance. Without them, our immune system can go haywire from the stress of too much pollution, processed foods and vegetable oils. What happens is this. Any time the body responds to a stimulant, it increases the amount of platelets that float around in the blood. Too many of them can coat artery walls ["plaque"] which tends to make them inflexible.
A recent study from the UK was published in Clinical Nutrition. It found that omega 3s taken with medium fat meals had a positive effect on arteries. They were much more flexible.
"These data indicate that acute long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid-rich meal consumption can improve postprandial arterial stiffness. This has important implications for the beneficial properties of long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and cardiovascular risk reduction," stated the researchers.
Notice that they did not state that there was a fish oil blood pressure association. They just said that your blood vessels would be healthier.
Omega 3s are part of every cell membrane in our body. A deficiency will cause them to harden also. This has nothing to do with plaque. This inflexibility will either slow down or keep normal chemical balances from occurring. In heart patients, this causes cardiac arrhythmia - one of the chief reasons why people do not survive heart attacks.
Dr. Massimo Santini, chief of cardiology at Rome's San Filippo Neri Hospital told the N.Y. Times that not prescribing fish oil to a heart patient "would be considered tantamount to malpractice." Notice that he did not mention any fish oil blood pressure connection either.
Thousands of research studies have proven that using omega 3s will dramatically help your cardiovascular system. The slight fish oil blood pressure benefit is not that important. Educated consumers do not use it for that reason.
