We have all heard the benefits of networking. Essentially, networking is all about establishing contacts that could, one way or the other, advance our interests whether it be business or career. It is therefore essential to spend your time in making sure that your network is maintained. It is also worth mentioning that you do not waste your time by doing the wrong things in those networking meetings.

The success of a networking stems from the trust that is developed among members. It is therefore imperative that you, as part of a network, show sincerity and professionalism. The following are some mistakes to avoid, that is, if you do not want to waste your time being part of a networking group:

1. Do not make your network group a venue to release stress. Your fellow networkers are not there to listen to your gripes about your difficult boss or your rumor mongering colleagues. In the first place, they are not really there to listen to your complaint; they are there to learn or get referrals.

2. Do not just stick to one. While this is a good advice for married couples, avoid this at all costs. You have to circulate to ensure that your professional business cards are distributed properly and randomly. The idea here is to get as much professional business cards and to get as many of yours handed out as well.

3. Do not dominate discussions. The last thing fellow networkers want is someone who hugs the limelight. Networking is about getting to know others. And when we say ‘others’ we don’t mean only you. Give chance for the others to shine. This means that conversations should not be dominated by anyone, particularly if is a small group discussion.

4. Do not be a hard sell. I have met many networkers whose primary efforts are directed to selling themselves or their business. This is very annoying and it makes others want to leave you alone. Networkers are wary of people who are just in it for whatever they can get out of it. This attitude is very obvious and is absolutely a turnoff to anyone.

5. Don't rush to follow up on a referral when someone gives you one. Hey, they know where to find you if they really need you. The better approach is to establish a relationship with the referral. Once you get to know her, the business side will naturally follow.

6. Do not invite guests. It is not your party after all. Unless you get permission from the network or go through appropriate channels, it is impolite to both the group and your guest. While your guests may contribute to the discussion and may in fact be an asset to the organization, it is but proper to make proper introductions to the group before you bring him or her over to the meeting.

7. Do not be late. That shows everyone how professional you are. If you think the group will not notice, think again.

8. Do not be absent. How can you distribute your professional business cards if you are not physically present? You paid for membership and you have invested time in your network so why waste the opportunity?

9. Do not take phone calls or check your email during a conversation. It is impolite and distracts the other persons. It will also make you appear disinterested and disengaged. Leave the phone on silent mode and only check your device if you are not to talking to someone which is not a good idea if you are in a networking group.

10. Do not forget to order business cards!
