Your writing freelance career has begun, and you are excited to start spinning the myriad of words inside you in order to get that lovely pay-check. If you are just beginning, however, it may be prudent for an experienced writer like myself to give you some advice. A writing freelance career may be an amazing life, but it may also be extremely frustrating. Here are some words of advice you don't want to forget.
1. Not all job listing sites are set up by "the good guys".. Sadly, but like in the majority of other businesses, there are scammers out there. Do your homework prior to accepting a job assignment. Take a peek around online forums for writers and look for complaints about response times or payments from that specific job board. Your freelance writing career can't afford to take a hit such as a website simply "vanishing" once your assignments have been uploaded.
2. Answering "blind ads" is risky. It is not the most pleasant thing to do, but it is worth it to be suspicious. Why are they hiding their company's info, if indeed they are legitimate?
3. Open your horizons. Don't ever think that freelance writing is limited to novels or articles. Of course, they are popular avenues for your writing freelance career, but there are countless other ways you can make money with your writing! Poetry, blogging, sports writing, story writing,... and those are just a few!
4. Don't believe that winning any job bid will help your writing freelance career. Beginners tend to believe this. The truth, however, is that a lot of damage can be done to your reputation as a writer if you publish less than top quality work owing to your lack of knowledge about the actual subject matter. Bad evaluations can remain a long time! Especially at first, stick to topics that you know well, and submit really good pieces.
Like anything worth working for, it helps to be intentional in the actions you take to develop your writing freelance career. Follow the suggestions above, and start writing! Your enjoyable and possibly lucrative job is waiting for you! If you know how to find (and few do) those top paying writing assignments, you'll likely do well. Sadly, most of what "rookies" find when looking for writing jobs online is so low-paid that it often does not seem worth the effort. Do not give up. Just get SMART!
