Few people love the sight of stretch marks. Yet the truth of the matter is that many of us, at one point or another in our lives, will have to deal with stretch marks and their disfiguring effects on the body. Stretch marks are known to afflict people when their skins are faced with periods of rapid growth, which push the skin beyond its elastic limits; like for instance what happens during pregnancy, and what happens during some periods in puberty when most people experience spurts of rapid growth that put the skin’s elasticity to real test.
Now the truth of the matter is that these underlying causes of stretch marks are things you can really do nothing about (seeing that you can’t stop pubescent growth, and if you decide to avoid pregnancy, you would have to reconcile yourself to childlessness). The good news, however, is that there are some things you can do to mitigate the effects of the stretch marks during the periods of rapid growth, and some of these mitigating factors are in fact so effective that in spite of the body being faced with rapid growth that puts its stretch marks to test, no stretch marks actually end up being formed on it.
The first of these three ways through which you can protect yourself from stretch marks is simply ensuring that you are well hydrated throughout (basically by taking plenty of fluids, the recommended eight glasses of water per day…you know, the usual drill). It has been observed that well hydrated skin tends to have a greater elasticity than poorly hydrated skin, making it less prone to stretch marks even when faced with periods of rapid growth. Incidentally, by taking to keeping your body well hydrated, and making a habit of it, you could also be saving yourself of the whole range of much more serious health complications than stretch marks that are caused by perpetual dehydration in the body.
The second of the three ways through which you can protect yourself from stretch marks is through exercise. The mechanism through which exercise works in keeping the body free of stretch marks is pretty much the same mechanism as the one through which the use of hydration does, namely by increasing the elasticity of the skin, and thence making it less prone to the stretch marks. Of course, not every type of physical exercise will be useful in this regard (although some exercise is still better than absolutely nothing). And if the stretch marks you are trying to avoid are pregnancy related, you might have to seek your doctor’s blessings before engaging in any type of exercise during pregnancy.
The third of the three ways through which you can protect yourself from stretch marks is the through the use of the various stretch mark creams. Most of these work by thoroughly hydrating the skin (to increase its elasticity) and thus keep it out of stretch marks’ way. The best of these stretch mark creams are actually known to get rid of stretch marks that might already have started forming on the skin, while also protecting you from developing more.
