The play entitled the innocents opened at the local theater starring some local talents. Once you look at the set, you shall see a picture, the subject of many strange speculations. An unknown person is said to take ownership of this portrait for years and years. This lady recalls that she was traversing the road when this caught her eye that she just had to park and go buy it from the shop and she did not know why.
How can I possibly afford this, she thought as she waited there for the clerk to take the photo from the window. It was school time soon and she realized that she needed to purchase clothes, books and supplies for the kids. So she rehearsed in her mind what she was going to tell the saleslady, that even if she found the picture so pretty, she could not take if for she just can't afford it. Prior to the attendant returning the portrait on the wall, the lady suddenly shouted that she badly wanted it and will get it no matter what happens to her.
The lady, after paying and walking out of the antique store wondered how exactly she allowed herself to buy it when she could not even afford it, and how she was possibly going to explain to her husband as soon as he finds out about her ridiculous compulsion that made her buy that painting. It was a painting done around the late 1800's and early 1900's, featuring a Borzoi, a Russian wolfhound in oil. Most would agree that it was an enchanting portrait but then for some who have been trained and are familiar with the Borzoi, they should be able to point out that it was absurd how the artist chose to show only the head and shoulders of the dog, and cast it in an almost straight on pose. There is disproportion when it comes to the chest and shoulder.
This makes the fact that she bought the picture even more strange as she was very familiar with the breed and knew what a Borzoi should look like. It was rather bizarre how when her husband arrived home that night, he felt the exact same attraction his wife felt for the Borzoi painting and he did not blow up as what was thought initially by the wife who mindlessly overspent on something when the needs of the children had to be bought.
It was the subject of so many photographers and throughout all the pictures taken by both amateurs and experts, no two photographs ever came out to be similar. It was both creepy and amazing how strange lights would linger on the painting's surface, sometimes making it look like it was in color and then black and white sometimes, then there would also be moments when the dog would appear to be flat then three dimensional all of a sudden but the most bizarre instance would perhaps be a spectral face showing on its right side.
I think it is just the light reflections or more so, our hyperactive imaginations, the husband shared as he told his wife that he does not think that there is something strange about the picture that she bought. A plate that hung on the wall, which was made of ceramic fell with a crash but surprisingly, it did not break and neither was there a gash in it.
The Innocents production head and director asked the couple who owned the portrait if he could loan it for his play revolved around the story of the supernatural and he was relieved to learn that they gladly consented to making it part of the backdrop of his stage presentation. They insisted that something went with that picture, moving into their home on the day they bought it, and they believe that lending it for his stage play, the Innocents, might be able to shed some light on this mystery. At least this their hope.
