Want to get that old and faded look for your theme layout in poster printing? Let me teach you some easy to follow tips on how to do this. You don’t have to make the poster printer do everything for you, you know. You can easily add lots of interesting filters and effects in your design itself, so that it looks old and even grunge-like for poster printing. Let me get started with some basic moves on how to fade your design colors.

• Fade the colors – Fading the colors of your posters is one of the most basic effects that you can do to make your color posters look old. Faded colors of course make your design seem like it was worn down a bit over the years by moisture or just the typical deterioration of inks. There are many different ways to do this.

The simplest way however to fade your colors is to simply make your main design look a bit transparent over your main color background. You can do this easily in most graphics software by just changing the opacity settings of your main image layer. In Photoshop, you just select the layer in the layer view and then reduce the opacity settings on top of the layer view from 100% to around 50-60%. It all depends on you, but this is the simplest way to fade your image and make it look a bit older.

• Color filters – Besides trying to fade the colors of your posters, another simple thing you can do to manage the colors and add that old style effect is to enable a few color filters. The Sepia effect filter as well as the Black and White color filter from most graphic applications should easily do the trick of making your posters look dated. These color filters are usually associated with old photographs so it is a cinch to make your color poster look like an old photograph with this trick.

• Add some noise filters – Now, besides color management, another way to make your custom posters look old is to add some noise filters or effects. Every graphic software has some kind of noise or grain filter effect in its arsenal. Just play with all the filters found in your software. My recommendation would be to use a little percentage of the “Blur” effect filter, then add in typical noise filters like film grain. Some user friendly applications even have actual “vintage” filters that let you automatically set your image for the 1960’s, Old Western Style etc. Just try out what looks best for you.

• Use dated font styles – The font styles in your custom poster also have a big effect on how old your posters look. By using “dated” font styles, (the kind that looks like the ones used in the time period you want) you should easily add that old thematic feel to your design. There are plenty of free fonts from old typographical styles that you can download so you should have no problems acquiring what you need. From old English fonts, Roman fonts, to 80’s vintage fonts, it should be easy for you to get that old effect that you need.

• Use borders and frames – The posters of the past usually used some kind of border or frame. So it is also a good idea to use some to make your own color posters look old. Just make sure that you use a border style that was applicable in the time period you are gunning for. It should be easy enough to download a few free borders from the Internet, so don’t worry you do not have to create it from scratch.

• Print using cheaper, rougher materials – Finally, to make the whole old style complete, you may want to use cheaper and rougher poster printing paper materials. The actual texture of the paper will add that older style effect that you need to make your posters look more authentic. So make sure you specify to use that kind of cheaper and rougher paper to your poster printing company.

Great! I hope all these tips will help you make your custom posters look older and achieve the effect that you want. Use a combination of these effects to really hem in the effect. Good Luck!
