Lego Star Wars: The Video Game is a video game that was based from the Lego toys that had a Star Wars theme. This was first released in public in April of 2005, a month before the last Star Wars movie was shown in theatres.

This game was created by Traveller’s Tales in 2005 for PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox video game consoles and Windows personal computers as well. On the other hand, Griptonite Games created the Nintendo Game Boy Advance version of the game. Aside from this, a Mac port was made by Aspyr in the same year. A Nintendo Game Cube version of the game also became available later that same year.

The story of Lego Star Wars: The Video Game is parallel to the story of Star Wars Episodes 1, 2, and 3 with just a little bit of differences or changes. In the Lego Star Wars: The Video Game they eradicated or just brushed on scenes from the movie that do not have too much action. Also, some things were added in the scenes to make it funnier.

When it comes to Lego Star War’s game play, it can be seen that the game was really intended for children. The game has a sum of 56 playable characters. All of the playable characters look like Lego toys and when they die, they all disassemble into pieces like an actual Lego toy. There are different kinds of characters found in the game but all of them are locked and can only be used once the player has completed levels or bought them at Dexter’s Diner. Aside from this, characters are categorized into different groups depending on the skills they possess. For example, Jedi can double-jump, make use of lightsabers, can control the force which they can use to activate or lift Lego objects or destroy some enemies. Another example would be Jar-Jar, Grievous’ Bodyguard and General Grievous that can do super jumps that allow them to do challenges or obstacles that Jedi can’t do. Also, characters that have blasters with them can grapple; droids who are unarmed can travel through the game without being deliberately attacked by enemies. Protocol and astromech droids can open special doors. Basically, every character, except for PK Droid and Gonk Droid, has a special ability or skill. However, only one character, Chancellor Palpatine, can use the dark force.

Lego Star Wars: The Video Games could also import unlocked characters in the game’s sequel called Lego Star Wars: The Original Trilogy as an extra called “use old save.” However, this would cost 250,000 Lego Studs.

However, characters from Episodes 4, 5 and 6, such as Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo, are not included in the playable characters because the game focuses only on Episodes 1, 2 and 3. These characters appear in Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. But, if the player unlocks the last level, which is also an episode 4 preview, Darth Vader, a stormtrooper, a rebel and Princess Leia becomes available.

Aside from the great set of playable characters, it has a “Free Play,” gameplay. This “Free Play” allows players to play a level again and the ability to change between characters. This also enables players to enter areas that have extra players that were not unlocked or retrieved by players before. Also, during Free Play mode, players can make use of characters that they have unlocked unlike in Story Mode that only enables players to change characters that are a part of the scene. However, Free Play will only become available once a player has finished a level in Story Mode. Also, vehicles that are used during levels in Story Mode cannot be played in Free Play Mode.

Aside from the playable characters and the game mode, a frequent place visited in the game is called Dexter’s Diner. Dexter’s Diner is the place where the player decides which level he wants to play or enter. It is also the area where the player is allowed to enter the Parking Lot to look at any vehicles whose parts they have found. The parts of these vehicles can be found in a 10 mini-kit canisters that are spread out in different levels. Aside from this, players can buy unlockable extras or things in replace of Lego studs at the diner counter of Dexter’s Diner.

The gameplay mentioned is used for PlayStation 2, Microsoft Xbox and personal computers. The gameplay used for Game Boy Advance of Lego Star Wars is a bit more different. Some of the differences of the Game Boy Advanced version of Lego Star Wars’ game play are: portability of the console, it has lesser playable characters, devalued Lego studs, fewer levels, only one playable character can be seen on screen, and cut scenes include still frames of the home gaming console versions.

Aside from these, every character that makes use of lightsabers can deflect blaster shot directed at them, as long as they are attacking the shot, and each playable character has his or her own style. However, blaster shots can only be deflected if they are directed straight towards the player at the front and not in any other direction. Aside from this, blaster characters can also charge a shot by holding the button, to make the blast strong and use it against several enemies. Although blaster characters can deflect enemies’ shots against them, they cannot do the same thing with Jedi. Also, Playable characters can only be the ones to make use of the force to move different objects.

Lego Star Wars is one of the kid-friendly games sold in the market today. In fact, it was able to receive the Game of the Year award from Kidzworld.com. It was also able to receive positive feedback and was able to grab the top of the UK charts in early May 2005.
