Nothing is as interesting as learning how children develop and grow. The complexity of how a child goes from being a zygote to a functioning adult in just a few years is fascinating. There is more to being a baby than is immediately discernable. There is more to being a baby than simply being cute. They each have individual needs and wants that parents need to take care of to make sure that development occurs the way it should. There is so much more to infancy development than most people realize. The more you understand about child development the better parent you will be!
The heart is almost always formed and operational by the time a woman takes her first pregnancy test. It only takes about three weeks for a baby's heart to form and start working. It is pretty much right around this date that a woman realizes that she is pregnant. Most people find the fact that a few cells can be turned into an organism with functioning organs is such a small amount of time nothing short of a miracle. Isn't it marvelous that biology made the foundation of your most important muscle in such a short time?
Even though it can take a few months for a baby to form specific words, their range of vocals is quite impressive. This is because the larynx (or voice box) is still developing after babies are born. This is why an infant's vocal range is wider than that of an adult. Listen carefully because before you know it your baby will have started to use his sounds for different items. This is why a mother can usually tell if her baby's cries mean that he is hungry or tired or that he needs a diaper change. A baby's first word is usually one that he can make using the consonants made by the front of his mouth and a couple of vowel sounds. This is why "dada" is usually said before "mama"-because "mama" is harder for a baby to learn to say, but "dada" usually happens almost by accident!
While we all know that babies cry to signal distress or the need for some form of attention, you might not know that a baby does not cry tears until he or she is a few weeks old. Tears contain stress induced hormones. This is one of the reasons people cry when they are stressed-the tears release the hormones which calms the body down. This hormone does not get created until after a baby has been born. Some babies won't start to cry real tears until they are a few weeks old. Other babies can take a few months to begin producing tears when they cry.
There are so many things about babies that are not well known-you will never get bored learning about child development. The rapidity of baby growth is astounding to most people. But do you know just how they develop? Do you know all of the stages between birth and adulthood? Learning about babies never gets boring, just look at the interesting things you know now that you did not know a little while ago.
