Okay, so you have just bought your very first greenhouse. Congratulations! It has all been delivered, set-up and it looks great in your back garden. Now it is time to start planting your first crop of vegetables! But what exactly are you going to grow? Let’s be honest, you’ve never grown any of your own vegetables before and you don’t want to go making a hash of things, do you?

Well, it is always best to start off with the easiest crops in www.hartley-greenhouses.com greenhouses. You may like the idea of growing a huge variety of fruit and vegetables, but being over-ambitious will often land you in a whole heap of trouble! Save your dreams of an abundance of crops for the years to come, when you have had a little more experience.

Anyone who is just starting out with a greenhouse cannot go far wrong with these three vegetables. They are the easiest ones to grow and you will learn plenty along the way!

Tomatoes
Just about anyone with a greenhouse will grow their own tomatoes. They will have a far better flavor than the ones you buy at the store and they will not have been sprayed with nasty pesticides either! As far as growing tomatoes goes, it really is a walk in the park. The only golden rule is to pinch out any new growth along the main stem. This will need doing every couple of days and it will ensure that you get a maximum amount of fruit on your plants. Then, as long as you keep them watered and they get enough sun, you shouldn’t have any problems at all. Just remember that greenhouses can easily get too hot. If your tomato plants begin to look wilted or scorched, then cover some of the glass with a sheet of opaque plastic and leave the greenhouse door slightly open.

Cucumbers
The most important thing about these is that you will get a great deal of cucumbers from each plant (normally at least twenty!). One plant will usually give you more than enough to eat. Once your plant has begun to produce cucumbers you will have a job keeping up! They grow quite rapidly and there is a very real chance of you overdosing on salad for the next few weeks! You will probably end up giving away quite a lot of your cucumbers to your friends and neighbors too.Cucumber plants will also drink a vast amount of water. Check the soil around them frequently and ensure that it is always kept moist.

Peppers
These will normally grow a little slower than tomatoes or cucumbers and you will not get so many from each plant. If you didn’t already know; green, red and yellow peppers all come from the same type of plant. So it is entirely down to you when they are picked. If your plants are good and healthy then they will have lovely shiny leaves. Make sure you keep them well watered, but they will not usually need so much as your other plants.
