Infrequently one, me evidently included, wonders WHY on earth there is jewelry on earth (and perhaps elsewhere). Asking around I realized that the answer lies within the field of what is identified as Anthropology or the science of human culture or even Archaeology - the learning of the relics of antique cultures…
To my surprise I discovered in advance digging that jewelry is not the absolute realm of girls. Guys of and in different cultures ornate themselves too with what their traditions considers precious. Sometimes more so than females. The good-old saying that the expensive diamonds are girls’ best friends does not in actuality sound 100% exact. To be even extra straightforward, to my mind, diamonds are everybody’s best friends in a way. Initially, because of their value - and I hope I made myself clear enough. While you hold a small piece of crystal in your hand that is worth of thousands of dollars, you sense kind of … ok, rich and authoritative. In addition, the mystery of the diamond itself - as it is relatively rare and considered to be the “mightiest” mineral out there. Makes every person feel a bit delighted altogether, doesn’t it? So, males are quite fond of the expensive diamonds also. I for myself haven’t met a single male who would not like to have precious stone jewelry, instead of just a metallic one.
Hey, peek around, aren’t today’s guys earringed, ringed, necklaced let alone tattooed galore? Why so, I wondered. No surprise, this looks like to be a part of human nature itself. Drawing interest to one’s originality, to what one can have the funds for (or what one’s courting party may be able to afford, still a boost to the wearer ego), now and then to one’s courage, one’s attractiveness, at times-one’s taste or an expected enhancement of one’s splendor…
All applying alike to men and women. I do, on the other hand find a few evolution and some eternal traits in it all. The evolution is in terms of materials used… While in the west the dominant materials have been, traditionally, the so called precious metals, semi-precious stones, valuable stones, all known as gems, and precious stones, you might add to it jade in the orient and ivory almost everywhere but featuring prime in its countries of origin.
Low and behold, and the “why” is changed by “Y”… Come my people. The feared and splendid Generation Y… We, now and then and depending on mood or life-cycle exact period, do also yield to the charms or authority of the old world, so to say, jewelry materials of choice, I mean - all those valuable metals and gem stones, but, more outstandingly, have located some conditions and greatly expanded the variety of popular materials…
Lots of us at the present pay attention to the issue of blood diamonds… We prefer to buy blood free precious stones, best matched, perhaps, by Canadian diamonds, or even lab-grown diamonds, best even diamond people that use some of the proceeds to support an NGO, and alternative materials… Wood… Plastic… and for resilient and reliable material, stainless steel, titanium and most recently black titanium. Materials that the concept creators would not have even dreamt of… Don’t ask a Y Why… It is the similar answer as all along, the requirement to bear jewelry of humans!!!
