In an effort to help a poodle fulfill its maternal instincts, a dog psychologist ended up prescribing a box turtle. With regard to his profession, he is very serious about it and so he wrote a book he called understanding your dog. Explaining how animals are also individuals is the book off this doctor who is an associate professor of psychology at local university and associate director for research at the local zoo. Despite the fact that people sometimes presume too much, he expresses himself honestly.

He told on a recent visit here, of a case where a young couple owned a dog and the dog wouldn't let the husband into the bedroom. Written in his book was how the dachshund owned by the couple would experience catatonic fits when they fought. Aside from having body language that is human like, dogs develop like young children according to him. He also says dogs, like humans, have different abilities to tolerate closeness.

What the doctor points out is how dogs develop through several stages and so getting a puppy is best done when it is between six and eight weeks old. Unless a puppy has been raised with a lot of people around then getting one puppy older than 10 weeks is not advised. A dog's interaction with other puppies is something you should take note of before buying a dog. Beware of the most outgoing one, he warns, because he might be the most aggressive.

Considering taking along an old scarf or a glove and see if he will play a game of tug of war after investigating it. Discipline training for a puppy at five or six weeks is rather pointless since he will just forget it but what he needs at this time is some tender loving care not to mention a number of experiences for his environment to be enriched.

He mentions how there is a sensitive fear period at eight weeks wherein owners should avoid any traumatic situations for their puppy including a visit to the doctor. It is at 12 weeks when the dog is already emotionally bonded to his owner and at this time discipline training will not break his spirit or attachment. Different people in various situations are given recommendations for dog breeds by this doctor who has a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university.

A golden retriever is the best choice for a family with children, terriers are advised for young couples, apartment couples on the other hand will love a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier, or a poodle, and considering older couples they will definitely be happy with a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese, or pug. But, he says, you used to be able to tell the temperament of a dog from the breed, now you can't. Considering this, he puts the blame on less quality in breeding.

There are dog breeders who make a joint effort in changing the standards of breed and he calls them cranks. Making changes to standards is unacceptable especially if the people do not know the possible results, he said. Considering prize dogs, before they are named the best in the breed, there is emphasis today on the necessity of testing. This should be considered to ensure that you do not have a zombie for a winner.
