The golden era of the 70s and the 80s would always be synonymous for bringing into life new fashion trends and style statements in to foray. These innovative designs caught the interest of millions and ruled over their hearts. The fashion industry had a very swift transition during those years. The emergence of MTV totally changed music industry, fashion and anything it can be related to. People were trying to redefine themselves during these years. The changes that both men and women brought upon themselves were almost instantaneous.
People seemed to sport tight clothes on the upper half and loosely fitting fabric on the lower half in the 70s. This got completely reversed in the decade of 80’s where women used to wear bold dresses having shoulder pads and men used shirts in full sleeves which were stitched in expensive material along with loose fitting baggy trousers that were slightly tapered at the ankle joint. “Romantic Movement” influenced by the former ruffians was commonly started by a new designer romantic look. Leather and designer jeans caught the creativity of the people.
Women had adapted wearing high heel pointed shoes as business wear & jelly shoes that have been transparent and came in glossy colours as party wear. Tracksuits and jogger pants shared the mantle for leisure wear during those occasions. Acid washed faded jeans and denim jackets together with piercing and tattooing were made popular by the music bands. Men began to wear earrings. The hair looked shiny with volume for which mousse was used a lot in those times. Colored and streaked hair came into fashion. The full trend of hair was reversed as men had long hair while women had short hair.
Jewellery encrusted with precious stones became a display of prosperity and power. Women wore long odd earrings which sometimes didn't match each other. They sometimes even wore single earrings. The trend in jewellery was to wear chains of gold & silver in punk style and neon colours. Shape of the jewellery changed drastically. Digital watches with metal wristbands started popularising the beginning of ‘80s but later on adults came back to dial watches. Teens still favored the radiant colours of plastic watches. Watch faces had roman numerals. High class preferred to wear Movado style that was sleek and had a dot at 12. Wearing two wrist watches on a single arm became a style. Gold bracelets and hoop earrings grew to become popular in this time.
Further, the popularity included leather designer bags, clutch bags for their compactness & appeal and briefcases. Women were accustomed to match their shoe colour with that of their bags. Shawls in different designs and colors became a favorite of the women. These shawls could be put on with tops in the day and gowns at night. Designer underwear also set styles. Women preferred the ones with laces and light colors. Colourful boxer shorts in different patterns and stripes became available for men. Small metal framed eye-glasses became common towards 1984-85. A smaller rounder type stayed popular through the entire decade. Fashion had heavy effect on everyday living of those years.
