Creating descriptive file names will help to keep the pages on your site organized. Besides keeping the documents organized, it will also help your site to be more SEO friendly. Descriptive name for document webpage involves using meaningful name for the document filename. If you surf the internet, you will surely have come across websites that uses pages with odd file name. The file name of the page is reflected in the URL address. For example, the URL of the webpage contains a series of numbers or generated alphabetical letters. Generated URL addresses are not SEO friendly. They will not be able to rank well for the targeted keywords. Other sites with optimized URL will be able to rank for the targeted keywords better.

By creating a descriptive document name, the visitor can easily recognize the URL. When they want to visit your site, they can retrieve from their memory the URL of your webpage. If the URL contain generated letters, it will be difficult for the visitors to remember it. The visitors will have problem finding your site, especially if your site has not yet established in the search result. The file name of the web document must be short. The shorter the name of the web document, the easier the visitor can remember it.

CMS sites such as blog often use generated URLs. Nowadays, many blogs offer an option to allow the blog owner use permalink based on the title of the post. The blog owner can also enter whatever name they want for the blog post. If you own a blog, make sure you use permalink that is based on the title of the post. The URL of the web document should contain at least one keyword. You should not include too many keywords in the URL because it will be considered spamming. The search engine will not rank your site if you include too many keywords in the URL.

It is important to use meaningful words in the URL structure. You should avoid using lengthy URLs that contain parameters and session IDs. Generic page names such as “page 1” or “page 2” should be avoided. You should not spam the URL with too many keywords. Example of URL that contains an excessive amount of keyword is “wedding-cake-wedding-cake.html”. The same keyword should only be repeated at least once. Repeating the keyword multiple times will not help your page to rank higher in the search result. The document page should not be buried deep under the directory structure. It is important to create simple directory structure. Example of deep subdirectory nesting is “…/directory1/directory2/directory3/directory4/page1.html”.

Using a deep nesting subdirectory will cause the search engine to assign lesser points to your website. The search engine did take into account the structure of the structure of the document nesting. The directory name that you use must have relation. For example, if content of the folder is dog care web documents, the folder should be named as “dogcaretips” instead of “folder1”. The web document should only be stored in one folder. There should not be duplicated web documents that are stored in different folders.
