Astral projection is described and defined as being an instance where the conscious mind exits the corporeal body and is able to witness the world from a new, non-physical perspective. Or, more concisely, astral projection is another term used to describe out-of-body experiences, also known as OBEs.

Why there are two terms to describe the same occurrence is an intriguing point to ponder; perhaps 'out-of-body experience' is something people can immediately determine the definition of just by the wording, whereas 'astral projection' might need a further explanation. Or perhaps it is because 'out-of-body experience' is used to mostly describe the incidence of involuntarily leaving one's secular shell. OBEs tend to more commonly reference people who will have near-death experiences, or who are distraught or ill who have their senses of consciousness leave their bodies on their own.

Astral projection, while the same thing as an OBE, is mostly used to describe when people readily select to leave their bodies and enter the dimension known as the astral plane. Astral projection occurs when the body enters a diminished state of consciousness, also known as the hypnagogic state, which is a state of perception halfway between being awake and being asleep.

The earthly body is said to have a relaxed grip on the mind in such a state, making it easier for the mind to exit the body. This is why projection so often occurs during sleep, and due to the traveler's state of consciousness being a bit too released by the body, they often will not remember that they projected during the night.

During projection, some people report doing something like hovering over their unconscious bodies, while others report being able to teleport to any place in the world, even if they have never been there with their physical bodies. Despite the distance traveled, the astral being remains connected to the corporal body via a 'silver cord', which is sort of an umbilical cord of spiritual energy. Your mortal being will serve as sort of an anchor and this silver cord of unlimited length will allow you to remain attached to your body and thus allow you to re-enter said body when you're done projecting.

It is hypothesized that astral projection cannot be real because it violates the laws of physics, but spirituality and physics are two subjects that have never really gone hand in hand. If the phenomenon of astral travel wasn't real, why have so many people experience it?
