The right framing selections can help transform an inexpensive print, or even a poster into something that looks like an expensive work of art. Matching art is not the purpose of mat colors but to enhance it. A good choice if you want it to pick up a color from the image is to go for a double or triple mat. Keep in mind that top mats should be neutral while color is great for bottom mats. Double and triple mats add dimension to your framing.

Should you want to determine the mat width then you should take note of the size of the piece and the width of the frame. There should be no common width for the mat and frame. Detracting from the image is a striped appearance that is formed. For the bottom mat of a double mat it should extend to one half inch. The same width should be used on all sides of every mat for it to look good.

Consider distinctive edges in your set of floating prints and other images. Any floating image will be hinged to the front of your mat board. Borders are created around images when there are mat boards. It's okay if a print with a deckled edge is uneven, and therefore not perfectly centered on the mat. If there's nothing distinctive about the edges you may simply want to have your mat cut so that it may be placed over the edges of your image.

Sometimes framing photographs can be tricky. Considering formal photographs like wedding pictures and portraits ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes are great but considering art photos including those in black and white simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames should be used. A competition with the grays in black and white photographs happens with gold finished or cherry wood frames.

What works well with antique photographs are ornate frames. When it comes to old black and white photos silver frames work best. Whenever you have sepia prints choose antiqued gold finished frames or wooden ones in mahogany, ebony walnut, and cherry. Should you have traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes go for fabric liners and ornate mouldings. Refrain from using liners and opt for simple frames for contemporary paintings.

Framing has a variety of purposes other than being used for prints, posters, photographs, and paintings. There are things you may want to display at home or in your office including political buttons, old letters and postcards, fabrics, theater tickets, christening dresses and these could all be framed. The minimalist look applies to gallery style framing. Usually the frames are made from wood in natural finishes or matte black.

There is no ornamentation on the frames but only straight edges. Thick are the mats used for gallery style framing usually coming in 8 ply in various shades of white. For all sides of a 3 by 5 inches may come about mats that are 5 inches wide. The viewer's eye is drawn into the image by the heavy mats aside from making it seem that the piece is important.

Ornate wood frames remain popular because they work well with antique furnishings and reproductions. Whereas the formerly popular high sheen silver and gold frames reflected the opulent mood of the 1980s, the antiqued silver and gold frames reflect the more restrained spirit of the 1990s. When it comes to industrial metal frames and metal frames from a decade ago there are a lot of changes. Other than brushed finishes with cross hatching, the new ones have cleaner lines and are much wider. When it comes to framing options, these are as economical as earlier metal frames.

Revitalizing art photography are the famous photographers but restoration services are responsible for the popularity of restoring and framing your family's own antique photographs. If you compare antique posters to many original artworks the may be expensive to frame but they are less expensive than the latter and their value will continue to increase in time. What they are ideal for are loft dwellers and those who just have lots of wall space.
