Are you looking for horse agistment? Well the internet is exactly the right place to start your search. You'll find that there are quite a number horse agistment (and other services) directories on the internet. And also, many properties have created their own websites that outline the horse agistment services they offer. If you don't have access to the internet then another great way to find horse agistment properties is in your local business or telephone directories. And most horse lovers magazines will provide advertising space for horse agistment services.

Ideally it would be best if you can have your horse housed either near your home or work/school. But if that's not possible, then you will need to consider how far you are prepared to travel and then how you are going to get there. If you aren't able to drive there yourself, will you need to catch public transport and is it regular enough for the amount of time you will be there. You will need to visit your horse regularly so it should be relatively easy to get there.

What are the services you will require of the horse agistment provider? Do you just need outdoor grazing (and shelter) and you'll look after everything else? Or are you looking for something that can provide full care including blanket service and washing? It's now that you will need to determine both your needs and your budget. If you've got the time to spend with you horse then you will be able to do a lot of the care yourself. But if you don't have much time or are not sure that you'll be able to visit everyday, then you will need to ensure your horse is well cared for with full services provided. Of course, the more you get the agistment provider to do for you, the more you will have to pay in fees.

Once you have figured out what your requirements are, find 2 or 3 properties that fit into your criteria and make an appointment to go out and see them. This will give you something to compare against as each site can be vastly different. You will want to look out for things like, how well maintained are the grounds and stables, do other horses look healthy and happy. Find out exactly what equipment you will need to provide yourself and if they have storage facilities. In particular, find out if there are any restrictions on the hours that you may visit, this will be especially important if you are doing a lot of the care yourself.

And finally, once you have decided on the provider you will use, make sure that a contract is signed by both parties. This should outline the services that are to be provided and the roles and responsibilities of both yourself and the horse agistment provider. They should be able to provide this as they will have one in place with all of the horse owners. This piece of paperwork is important for both parties and it will mitigate any problems arising in the future.
