What many people may not be aware of is that there are companies that provide resume services to those individuals who have a less than desirable job history in order to make them better candidates for finding a job. These companies make up job references by pretending to be a past employer.
Some of these companies will even create a fictitious company complete with phone number and logo along with web site and LinkedIn profile. These services are sought by those people with bad references because they feel it is all it takes to prevent them from getting the job and income they need. With a job market that is practically nonexistent and all the competition out there for every job that comes available, some individuals rely on fake references to provide them with more options.
It isn’t surprising that those individuals who have legitimate references feel they are being put at an unfair advantage. Of course, there is also the fact that it is dishonest and misleading to use references that are untrue.
While most people don’t object to others having professional help in preparing their application or resume in order to present themselves in the best possible light, they also see a huge difference in what they consider to be a blatant misrepresentation.
Blame it on the Current Job Market
Some people believe that the tendency towards covering up their past mistakes instead of learning from them and getting past them are in part due to the economy. Finding a job today is beyond difficult. If you aren’t at the top of the list in skills and experience, you can pretty much forget landing any job.
Naturally, if there is a need then there is going to be someone there waiting to fill it regardless of how ethical it is. There are simply too many applicants for every job opening today and people are willing to go to extremes when it comes to getting an advantage. Even those persons who might normally resist the urge to use deception to land a job may have missed out on enough opportunities to encourage them to fake their references.
Is It Really Worth the Effort?
Using the services of a company to fake your references may be a waste of time. In many instances, employers never even check a potential employers references. For the simple reason that anyone can find someone to vouch for their experience and qualifications whether they are true or not, employers may check your job history several jobs back so that they have an overall idea of how you worked out as an employee.
Sites like Facebook and LinkedIn have made this an easier job for potential employers since individuals can list their employment history on one site. If something doesn’t add up, they will likely recognize it. While this has proven a benefit to employers, it is a problem for those potential employees who have something to hide.
The Cons of Using Fake References
Even if you don’t get caught immediately, you will have the job of covering up your lie from now on. While this may be effective in the near future, honesty will eventually win out. You can be forthright about the negatives on your employment history and turn them into positives by explaining how you have learned from them so that you don’t have to worry about the consequences of being dishonest.
