Driving in a motor vehicle can be one of the most dangerous things you could ever do. Unfortunately, the accident rates on the roads are very high, and you put yourself at risk every time you get behind the wheel. There are some things that you can do, however, to ensure that you do not have a collision, and at the very least, if you do have one, then the damage could be more minimal.

The first thing you need to do is ensure you are perfectly legalised and able to drive a motor vehicle. This means that you should NEVER drive without a driver's license, or when you are not able to fully concentrate on the road. Driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, recreational drugs or prescription medication that can impair your judgement are all unacceptable, as you will be putting yourself and other road users in danger. Always drive whilst sober, and with a clear head. This is the best thing you can do to prevent a collision. If you feel you are over the legal limit, it is best that you ask someone else to drive you to wherever you need to go. Besides the risk of being involved in a collision, you will have to worry about being locked up by the police if you are pulled over.

The next thing you need to do is to ensure that your vehicle is completely road worthy, and is totally safe to be on the roads at all times! This means that you have your car completely road worthy certified at all times. You should ideally have your vehicle checked at least once a year for road worthiness. Furthermore, you must also ensure that you keep to your car's service booklet. When you take your car for its regular services, you may be able to spot problems before they become major. In addition to this, you need to always make sure your brakes and tires are fully functional, as these can be the biggest contributing factor to a collision! Your tires are what keep you on the road, so you need to ensure that they have enough tread and are never bald. Whenever you have your vehicle filled up with fuel, have the attendant check your tire pressure. Simple measures such as these will help you to catch any problems before they arise. Go regularly to have your brakes tested, as faulty brakes can be very hazardous.

When you drive, be incredibly vigilant. One bad move could get you into a grievous accident. Remember that you not only need to watch yourself on the roads, but also other drivers. Even if you are driving sober and vigilantly, there might be another road user who is driving drunk or impaired. Keep an eye out, and your wits about you. You must be aware of pedestrians as well as other drivers. One of the best things you can do is to always maintain a safe following distance. This enables you time to brake if necessary, and will prevent a world of problems.
