There are little faces observing every move of this female graphic artist while she is in her home office. While she was at home, much of her time was spent on work she didn't particularly find enjoyable. Four dogs and four cats look at her through a screened door.
Because of those faces, this 34 year old's world suddenly opened up to new career. She was headed for Texas when she decided to put the images of her animals on canvas. She bases the colors used in the portrait from the animal's personality, and not its actual color.
When she paints, her purpose is to capture the animals' essence. I can use different colors to paint the animal and project its personality. Her very first painting showed a dog which she and her husband saw on a camping trip in Mississippi. This dog, red in color, remained close to the couple.
Green was the color she decided to use for her dog who was always jealous. She is not the first artist to ever paint animals using nonconventional colors. Inspired by the passing away of his beloved canine, a cajun artist created a portrait of a blue dog with red eyes.
The blue dog attracts attention in her paintings. There are those who are amused by the blue dog paintings, but the artist actually sees the paintings as a haunting interpretation of the loss he felt upon losing her. There is a spiritual meaning in each of the paintings if you look deeper than its comical exterior. The same questions that haunt humankind are what the dog asks us as she stares at us.
She desires that the very essence of the animal's life be found in the art. She makes use of electrifying colors and unusual patterns. All the animals she adopted were either from a shelter or were wandering in the streets. One of the dogs she now takes care of would take off from a neighbor's house and go to another person's house.
She started making herself known as a pet portrait painter last summer by placing fliers in vet offices. Her clients should give her photos of the animals and also a description of the personality of the animal, she explains. The colors are determined by her understanding of the animal. There is just something that these portraits give that satisfies customers, said the owner.
The painting of her was a bright yellow, revealing her energetic side. A person who knows the subject in a portrait will find much greater attraction to it, a gallery owner points out. You can look at a portrait, but it's possible you wouldn't appreciate the artistic element of it.
