Even people who love seafood know that having omega 3 rich cold water fish five or six times per week is usually not practical - not to mention taking the risk of absorbing the various ocean pollutants the FDA and EPA warn us about. A simple and safer alternative is taking fish oil supplements.
Taking fish oil products has become a lot easier over the years. Most now come in soft gel capsules that go down easy with water. If you have children, you can also cut them in half and squeeze the contents into something they like.
Of course, the main benefit is that you can get the necessary daily amount of omega 3 content without eating seafood five or six times per week. This also avoids the contaminant problem that I mentioned earlier.
There are no hard and fast rules about how much daily omega 3 is the right amount. The FDA and American Heart Association think that omega 3 in amounts of three grams per day is about right. If you are getting this amount by taking fish oil products, then that would be around 4-6 capsules, depending on the company.
A recent review published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology looked at 40,000 people from several different studies. Their conclusion was that people need a minimum of 1/2 to 1 gram of omega 3 per day for general health.
As you can see, the experts are not totally sure of the exact doses. That is up to you. They just want you to take at least a minimum amount. Researchers are well aware that over 90% of the US population suffers from an omega 3 deficiency. In other words, our typical diets are not enough.
There are several other things to keep in mind. This is an unregulated market and there is a lot of junk out there. There are products sold in national chains that are of questionable freshness and have dubious potency. Many use chemical additives as preservatives, or enteric coatings to disguise the taste or smell.
A quality product should have a faint ocean aroma or none at all. Research their websites. See if they can substantiate any claims. Lab reports are always nice to have but most companies prefer not to publish any.
My website can get you started on taking fish oil capsules. It will also provide more information on what to look for in a quality supplement.
