Overcoming lethargy is not an easy task. The very nature of this problem is the lack, loss or absence of self motivation. A vicious cycle develops when its heavy weight descends upon someone. It can creep up so slowly that its victim may not realize he has developed a problem. Often it takes a near catastrophe to bring the lethargic person to the point where he sees he's in trouble. And he must reach this point if he ever hopes to get back in the game.

Something prompts the sufferer to notice the effects of his general sluggishness. He may then feel that things are in such a bad state that no fix is possible. But, as with most everyday problems, the first thing he will need to do is figure out what needs to happen next. This is the most challenging part of the recovery process, and frequently it is where people become stuck.

The first thing he will need to do is to look objectively at his situation as it really is. This is not the time for doom and gloom or for rose colored glasses. The questions the sufferer must ask should not give rise to despair because of being negatively phrased. "What will become of me if I don't get my act together?" is not a question which will yield the desired results.

This question only serves to highlight the hopelessness of the situation and can cause an already struggling person to give up. This question is too overwhelming to be of any use. A better question is one which gives an answer leading to a specific, measurable objective.

A better question would be, "Is there some minor action I can take before bedtime, which tomorrow I will notice as an improvement?" The object here is not to clean the house from top to bottom. A possible useful action would be to look under the sink for cleaning solution and sit it on the kitchen table with a wash rag. In the morning it will act as a hopeful reminder of the larger goal.

As you can see, overcoming lethargy is no easy task. But with the correct mental attitude and by framing questions which will lead to achievable, minor goals, those who suffer from this debilitating condition can get their lives and achievements back on track.
