What is wireless internet?
Wireless internet or Wi-Fi (for Wireless Fidelity) makes it possible to go online without, there you go, a wire. No need for cables all over the house, just take your laptop outside, or upstairs or wherever you like.
Who can use it?
Also known wireless internet access, a hot spot is a local area network (LAN) run by radio waves rather than wires. Wi-Fi is broadcast from a central hub, which actually brings in the connection. The hub, located at the main computer system or server, broadcasts the connection to basically anyone within receiving range who is equipped with a wireless LAN card.
How many people can use it at the same time?
Several people can. Anyone with a laptop or desktop in another room can connect wirelessly to the Internet to share the main connection. Neighbors may also be able to access this wireless connection, which is why passwords were invented. So long, leeches!
Is it easy to install?
Yes. Anyone can do this! Wireless LANs can be installed within minutes by nearly anyone. They are extremely inexpensive, and can nowadays have data transfer rates that kick regular wired internet’s ass.
Why do I need it at work?
Money never sleeps, especially at work! With you and your colleagues surfing away, your boss loses a lot of money on wires throughout the building. And this, corporate slaves, is very expensive. Wi-Fi however is cheaper and easily installed.
Can I use it outside my house?
You sure can. One of the most popular applications for wireless Internet access is the public hot spot. Coffee shops, restaurants, even trains are examples of places where you can sit down with your laptop and sip coffee while cruising the Internet, checking email, or doing research.
I have internet on my phone. What’s the difference?
It’s a whole other ball game, that’s what’s different! Your phone has an internet connection which is calld UMTS, 3G, GPRS, GSM and what not. Though you can go online with this, it’s not Wi-Fi at all. But you can use Wi-Fi on that very phone. Just enable the Wi-Fi option on your pda and you’re onle for free. It’s usually faster than your phone’s internet.
What do I need to get it?
If you want wireless internet at home (and why wouldn’t you, this isn’t 1999!) you’ll need an access point to start with. These things come with the wireless modem you’ll also need. Ofcourse, your laptops and computers need network cards (but nowadays, most laptops pick up the signal because they already have one). Internet at home is different than the connection you want to pick up outside. When on the road, all you need is a PC card for your laptop or the Wi-Fi option on your phone. And all modern phones can do that trick!
