All of us have had this occur. After a busy day at work, the tie comes off and it is time to relax. We have sat near a necktie adding creases that you will never get rid of. Is the necktie messed up forever?
The best course of action is to be vigilant and avoid causing wrinkles in the tie. But, fortunately, there are things you can do to restore your neck necktie to its previous condition.
First, try hanging the neck tie for several hours. Due to the effect of gravity, mild wrinkles of your necktie will be removed on its own, and bring back the original glory of the attire. Once you wear a neck tie, it gets creased up and hanging it for some time helps to get rid of the creases off the neck tie before you store it. In order to allow the necktie to "recover," it is also prudent to wear a different necktie each day of the week. It is better to avoid wearing the same necktie for two days continuously in order to avoid wrinkles on it.
If hanging a tie fails to improve its condition, try rolling it up in a lengthy piece of cloth and securing it firmly. Stretching the necktie like this for a couple of days will hopefully bring back the necktie's original shape. Before storing the tie after you unroll it, make sure that it is hung for some time to get it straightened.
Depending on the fabric, you may be able to carefully iron the necktie to remove wrinkles. Be very cautious to use the proper heat setting on the iron; too much heat will certainly burn the fabric. You can use a steamer made for clothes or a kettle to eliminate wrinkles on a neck tie that is hanging, but you should be very careful. Remember to not iron and steam the necktie together at the same time.
Neck ties made of silk and many different materials need to be dry cleaned. The tie, if washed in the laundry, will get creases and the shape and color will be irrecoverably lost.
It is a must to store your neck ties in a proper manner so as to use them fresh and wrinkle-free for a long time. Storing a silk tie by hanging it along with other pieces of clothing will cause the silk to stretch. This will distort its shape or create "waves" in the body of the neck tie. To store the tie correctly, start at the narrow end and roll it towards the wide end and then put it in the drawer with other neckties. Pressing and crowding of a necktie may create a wrinkle or cause warping.
Tying a tie can cause the area around the knot to twist severely. While a knot should be secure to keep its form, it should neither be too tight nor too loose. When you take off a tie, be careful when you loosen and take apart the knot. Some men like to grab the top of the knot and pull hard until the tie unwraps from around the neck, but this extreme pressure is guaranteed to bend the silk fibers, deforming the neck tie for future use.
If you keep in mind that your silk neckties are very delicate and should be taken care of, your favorite tie should be around for many years, and have as good appearance as it did when you first bought it.
