Currency: In 2005 (January 1st) Ireland adopted the euro. Most merchants you come across will not accept any other form of currency, including the pound or the dollar. So remember, before you head over to Ireland, convert the cash you are going to be spending.
Exchanging currency: The value of the dollar compared to the value of the euro is constantly changing. Use this to your advantage! Watch the exchange rate for the few weeks prior to your vacation, and when you see the value of the euro close to the value of the dollar, make the exchange. Also, do not exchange your dollars for euros at airport kiosks or tourist "hot spots". They often have hidden fees or surcharges for exchanging.
Have cash with you: When in Ireland, or traveling in general, it is always a good idea to have extra cash for incidentals such as tips, pub meals, souvenirs, or toiletries. But if you are expecting to remain in Ireland for more than two weeks, it is a good idea to only bring two weeks' worth of cash, and withdraw as you need it. Credit Cards: Although you might not expect to use your debit or credit card while in Ireland, it is wise to have at least one of them with you, just in case. Before leaving the States, make sure you bank (or banks) know that you are going to be in Ireland, and make sure they know the duration of your stay. With high alerts on identity theft, many overseas transactions look suspicious and often result in the cancellation of that card.
