Some people may look at the title of this article and feel that they needn’t worry about reading everything. They think that they do not have a modified vehicle, but this is not always so. People seem to think of modified vehicles as the types of cars that they see with glamorous rims, tail fins and roaring engines. This is true, but there are small things that you can do to your car that can deem it to be called a modified vehicle. Remember that your vehicle is modified if you do anything to it that changes it from the way it came out of the factory. This can include putting larger tires on it, dropping the suspension marginally or even just changing the body kit slightly. These are all classified as modifications and will have an effect on your car insurance premium.

It is an unfortunate fact that car insurance companies charge higher premiums for modified vehicles. In some cases, certain motor insurance companies will not even insure your vehicle if it is modified. In these cases, some insurance companies even have a special division just for customised motor cars. But why is this?

Firstly, bear in mind that a modified vehicle will be more of an accident risk. Why is this? Because is travels a lot faster than a normal vehicle, naturally dependant upon the modifications, it could be more at risk to crash. It is an unfortunate statistic for modified vehicle drivers that their cars are more often seen involved in collisions. Many people put fast modifications on their cars and do not realise that they need to get a handle on the type of control they will need over their vehicle with these modifications. Due to the statistics, it is hard to escape from the fact that you are going to be paying more than you necessarily want to for your car insurance premiums.

Secondly, it is important that you know that modified vehicles are usually higher theft risks. This is because the modifications are usually noticed by thieves who deem the vehicle as more attractive to steal! If you have body kit modifications, or any enhancements that can be seen if you look into the vehicle, chances are your car will become a higher theft risk. This puts your vehicle into the higher risk theft category and therefore makes it more costly to insure!

It is easy to see why car insurance will be more expensive for a modified vehicle. If you are insistent on modifying your vehicle, for whatever reason, then there are other small things you can do to lower your insurance premium. Firstly, you can install a better security system so that you pay a cheaper premium. Installing an alarm, immobiliser and perhaps a tracking device can help you get a lower premium as a result of your lower theft risk. If you modify your vehicle and are worried about getting lumped with a more costly premium, you could be tempted to avoid telling your insurer about the changes you have made to your vehicle. This is a dangerous move to make, as your insurer will easily find out that you did not tell them about modifications if your vehicle is involved in a collision.
